The history of the pianoforte......

"In writing the " History of the Pianoforte " I have endeavoured to give the fullest particulars regarding
a subject interesting to every one who possesses the " Drawing-room Orchestra," by which name the piano
has been aptly designated.
Although some millions of pianofortes have been  manufactured in Great Britain, France, Germany, and
America, it is surprising how few pianists know anything respecting the theory, construction, and history of
their favourite instrument. If I have succeeded in even partially supplying the information required, the labour of love that has engaged my careful attention during the last ten years will not have been undertaken in vain." (Author's preface: The history of the pianoforte : with an account of the theory of sound & also of the music and musical instruments of the ancients (1879), by Edgar Brinsmead (1847/8-1907). London : Novello, Ewer & Co).
